To make computing easier we have devised a list of categorised hints and tips. These cannot substitute for the expertise of an engineer but they may assist you if you hit a “snag” when computing or want to improve your productivity.

Keep Monitors Cool
Computer monitors need to stay cool. Unfortunately, they make useful resting places for various items. However, if papers, manuals and other items are piled on top of the monitor, the cooling vents become blocked. This can cause the monitor to fail instantly or constant internal heat can shorten the monitors life over time.

Quick Commands (Adding Commands To Your Toolbar)
Adding frequently used commands to your toolbar will save you time. For example, to add the Save As command to your toolbar simply:

  • Click the Tools menu and select Customise
  • In the Customise dialog box, select the Commands tab
  • Then select File under Categories
  • Select Save As in the Commands box and drag it to the location of your choice on the toolbar (make certain that before you let go of the mouse button, there is a + sign not an x next to the icon)
  • After you released the mouse button, you should now have a Save As button on the toolbar

  • Outlook (email)

    How To Let People Know You Are Out Of The Office
    Outlook has a clever feature that auto-replies to all emails when you are away on leave or out of the office. To do this simply:

  • Select the Tools menu and click Out Of Office Assistant
  • Click I am currently Out Of The Office
  • In the “Auto Reply only once to each sender with the following text” box, type the message you want to send to others while you are out
  • Outlook will then send this message to all who send you an email

    Excel

    Save Your Chart As A Template
    After spending countless hours perfecting a chart with your favorite colours and fonts, you may want to reuse it in the future. To save the chart as a template, follow these instructions:

  • Select Chart / Chart Type
  • Click the Custom Types tab
  • Click Set as Default Chart
  • In the dialog box that appears, give your custom chart a name and description
  • Click OK

    Internet Explorer

    Go Directly To A Website
    Tired of waiting for your homepage to open when all you are going to do is type in a new address. Then try this quick trick:

  • Click the Start button in Windows 95/98/2000 and select Run
  • Type in the Internet address you want to visit (www.synaxis.co.nz)
  • Then click the OK button


  • Your browser will start and take you directly to the specified website.

    Word

    Quick Selections
    When working in Word, you can select a single word in your document by double-clicking it. You can select a paragraph by triple-clicking anywhere in the paragraph. This can be useful when you are cutting and pasting, or if you want to spell check a single word or paragraph.

    What To Do When Ctrl + Alt + Del Does Not Work
    If you get hung up in Windows 95 and the usual ctrl-alt-delete does not respond, press ctrl-escape. This may bring up the START menu from which you can shut down the system.
